Analysis Of Important Quotations
“To be or not to be” page 137-139.
In this quote Hamlet is contemplating whether or not to kill himself. After his father’s death and his mother remarrying his uncle he is wondering if death would be better than life. Whether he should try to fight fortune or to stand all of the “slings and arrows”. By killing himself he would fight fortune by going against it so he is debating if it would be nobler to take a stand against “outrageous fortune” or to suffer. This aids to our topic life, death, and uncertainty because it has all of them. He is uncertain whether he should kill himself or not which also plays in the themes of life and death. He also is hesitant about killing himself because he is uncertain about what will be waiting after death, it could be worse than life itself, which also plays in the theme of uncertainty.
The Skull page 287-289.
In this quote Hamlet is holding the skull of the old court jester Yorrick, as he holds the skull he remembers all the good times he had with Yorrick. In this scene it seems that Hamlet is directly starring death in the face. Hamlet comes to the realization that all men, great and significant to unknown, are doomed to the same fate. Therefore, the quote relates to our topic of life, death, and uncertainty because as he is faced with death he has an epiphany. As he starred into the skull of Yorrick, his old friend, he realizes and accepts the fact that death is inevitable.
“My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!” page 231.
In this quote Hamlet realizes that he has not taken any action yet and he’s losing sight of what he is trying to do. He is somewhat angry at himself for not taking action yet, he realizes this when the army of Fortinbras is willing to die for him for an insignificant piece of land yet he has taken no action in the murder of his own father. This relates to our topic of life, death, and uncertainty because he finally realizes that he needs to take action and avenge his father’s death. These people are willing to die for honour and Hamlet still hasn’t fought for his father’s honour and his own by killing his uncle who killed his father and married his mother.
Ghost’s speech. Page 67-69.
In this speech the ghost of Hamlets father comes to speak to Hamlet. He says that he was murdered by his own brother and demands Hamlet avenges his death. This aids to our topic of life, death, and uncertainty because Hamlets father was murdered. Another aspect that aids to uncertainty is the fact that Hamlet doesn’t know if he can trust the ghost or if it really is his father. This scene is what caused Hamlet to want revenge which caused the death of almost every character. Hamlets father also said not to harm his mother and leave her be which symbolizes life. Thus meaning this quote speaks of life, death, and uncertainty.
